Sauvage / Carnival

Like what you see?

Here's the story:

These are all people I met during long evenings beating the streets of New York. These individuals were clearly on the margins, more ore less out there. A somehow extreme version of the City That Cannot Love.

When my friend and fellow member of Group 289, Nele Van Doninck, showed me her color photographs from Brussel’s street carnival “Carnival Sauvage”, I immediately proposed a duo exhibition.

Her photographs depict individuals that choose to go out of character and act foolish for one day. They grant themselves that permission. My individuals are those whom society might once have called fools. They don’t ask permission to be who they are, but neither can they step out of character.
